UTV Troubleshooting Guide
Diagnosis is an important step in UTV maintenance. Identifying the source of the problem will help direct your efforts and make it easier to determine whether you’ll be able to fix the issue yourself or whether you’ll need to contact a service department. This guide from Cobb’s Tractor can help you troubleshoot potential maintenance problems related to your UTV.
Battery Issues
If your UTV isn’t starting correctly, one possible cause is a dead or undercharged battery. Undercharged batteries can simply be recharged, while dead ones will need to be replaced. If the battery is fine but you’re still experiencing problems, the issue might lie with the terminal connections. Grease the battery terminals, treat them with an anti-corrosive, and tighten them up. If your UTV model has a refillable battery and the electrolyte levels are dropping faster than they should, there may be a crack or hole in the cell, in which case the battery will need to be replaced.
Engine Trouble
If you’ve ruled out the battery as the cause of your UTV’s starting issues, the problem might lie with the engine itself. Engine repair is tricky since there are so many things that can go wrong, including a clogged injector, an empty fuel tank, a dirty or broken spark plug, a ruined ignition coil, or a wrecked crankshaft position sensor. Go through each part one by one to ensure that all of them are working as they should. If your UTV is still not functioning properly, take a look at the fuel system. Check the fuel tank, filter, electric fuel pump, and injector, and make sure that the fuel tank cover is still intact.
Overheating Engine
If your UTV’s engines seem to overheat more quickly than they should, the problem most likely lies with the coolant system. Check the coolant levels and top them off. If the coolant flow path appears to be corroded, flush the system. Other possible causes include a loose radiator cap or broken fan.
